The Creative Bird Gets The Worm

Posted By Stacey and Regina, Your PR Pilots on June 3rd, 2010

If you think business is all about nuts and bolts, the bottom line and the “net net,” then you are missing out on one of the most enjoyable and effective aspects of having a business: creativity.  Creativity is not just for “the creatives”…artists, designers and so forth.  Creativity and creative ideas can help distinguish your business from the crowd, turn your customers into fans, and get you attention from the media - and thus the world at large - that will make you money.

Think about it: it’s why journalists will often take a strange, sensational or unique spin on the “same ol’ story.”  It’s also why the wacky and the wonderful can spark attention.  For example, The National Railway Museum in the UK hired a six-year old as their “director of fun,” and was covered by the BBC.  Or when Southwest Airlines wanted to hire an internal blogger, they turned the candidate search into a competition where applicants had to submit a one-minute video, finding a qualified candidate and securing great publicity at the same time.

One example from our own experience is while launching the Princess Diaries 2 DVD for Disney, we pitched the news on a princess room makeover for two young sisters, just like what happened to Anne Hathaway’s character in the movie.  With the media interest in place, we easily secured an interior designer and retailer Pottery Barn Teen to participate in the segment, garnering free media coverage for all.

If it’s been a while since you’ve put on a creative hat for your business, pretend that you are going to the Kentucky Derby and don the most fun and fantastic one you can find.

Free Publicity Toolbox: Calendar Listings

Posted By Stacey and Regina, Your PR Pilots on May 20th, 2010

Are you holding an event or seminar? One of the easiest, and possibly most overlooked, ways to get free publicity is through calendar listings. Despite checking the local paper and other neighborhood news forums when looking for activities to do, many people do not utilize the calendar sections when it comes time to promoting their own event. We recently ran into a friend of ours who is hosting the 35th anniversary of his business by throwing a party for the neighborhood. He had spent a fortune printing up flyers and advertising in local papers. But when we asked him if he had submitted anything to the calendar sections, he had not even thought of it.

There are a number of places where you can submit calendar listings, depending on your business and your community. Larger cities may be less inclined to print something in the paper if it’s not a big event, but online community blogs are a great place to get the word out. Neighbors want to support their local businesses, and people are always looking for fun things to do. There are also smaller community newspapers; for example, your city paper could be the Los Angeles Times, but your community paper could be the Beverly Hills Courier.

What goes into a calendar listing?

You want to include the following items:

Who: Your company

What: Self-explanatory, but basically, what is your event? Is this an anniversary? A sale? A seminar? Philanthropic tie-ins should also be noted.

Where: Provide the address and note any needed parking information

When: Day and time

How: Do people need to purchase tickets in advance? How much are they? Is there a website?

Finally, you want to make sure you include your own contact information so journalists can get in touch with you for any follow-up questions.
